I lost my job at 52

Eva, after twenty years at the same company, they fired me in March. I send out résumés and no one answers.

My kids say “you’ll find something,” but I feel like the world moved on and left me behind. I’m even ashamed to tell my friends.

Hi there. Twenty years in a job isn’t just a position. It’s routine, identity, people. That it hurts this much is natural.

And the shame doesn’t belong to you. The layoff was someone else’s decision, not a judgment of your worth.

“Your experience hasn’t ended. Only the place where you’ll give it has changed.”

Tell your friends. Most jobs are found through people who know us, not through job ads. And look at what’s out there for people your age: retraining programs, career counseling, volunteering that keeps everyday life alive.

Give yourself a schedule, as if you were still going to work: time for job searching, time for walking, time for people. Days without shape weigh heavier.
With warmth, Eva
